Contained on the CD disc is a selection of 28 out-of-print books from the pen of an tAthair Peadar Ua Laoghaire.
The pages have been scanned and compiled in PDF format. Peadar Ó Laoghaire was a native Irish speaker and was born in Liscarrigane (Lios Carragáin), parish of Clondrohid (Cluain Droichead), Co. Cork. He was a priest in several parishes of the diocese of Cloyne; He was made a Canon in 1906).
An early work was Ar nDóithín Araon (1894) directed at the younger reader.
Very early in his career he set out his stall as an advocate of Irish as it’s spoke, ‘caint na ndaoine’, even to the point of standing up to establishment Irish academicians.
He advised: ‘If you are not able to do it (i.e., translate into English) yet, aim at it, and you very soon will. But do not torture us with your translations. |
They are by far the most deadly element in the disease which is killing our language.
They effectually disgust and repel the most courageous of native Irish speakers.'
’Later his works would become a model for Irish writing.
Of the works on this CD some are are retellings from older Irish literature: An Craos-Deamhan (1905), Eisirt (1909), Lughaidh Mac Con (1914), Bricriu (1915), and Guaire (1915). He often removed matter which he considered unsuitable which is a pity, but one supposes that he had in mind that the books might be used as textbooks in schools.
Other books on the CD are translations: Caitilína (1913), Na Cheithre Soisgéil as an dTiomna Nua (1915), Don Cíochóté (1921), Gníomhartha na nAspol (1922), and Lúcián (1924).
There is also a play, An Sprid (1911), and an autobiography Mo Sgéal Féin (1915).
